Lewes welcomed table topping Pulborough to the STG and made a good start, putting points on the board with a Smith penalty in the first ten minutes of the game. However Pulborough hit back by out flanking Lewes and scoring a try in the corner, to take the lead at 3-5.

They swiftly followed this up with another score nearer the posts that increased their lead to 3-12. Lewes were resisting well, but were put under a lot of pressure at both scrum and line-out. Worse was to follow as the penalty count against them rose and Darryl Benson received a yellow card.

Despite Pulborough having most of the play, Lewes’ defence was immense and, to their credit, they did not concede any further points during the yellow card period, as a rather lengthy opening half came to an end. In the second half things were rather different as injuries took their toll.

However, as in the first half, it was Lewes who scored first as Thomas Moore nailed a penalty kick to make the score 6-12, which kept them in touch with the possibility at least of a losing bonus point.

This scenario was then blown apart by Pulborough’s fluent attacking moves which accrued five more goals for them to produce a final score of 6-47. This isn’t to say that Lewes didn’t have their moments during the second half, for there was much to admire in the way they stuck to the task right up to the final whistle.

Next weekend the team travel to Jersey and the following Saturday (24th January) will be hosting Shoreham at the STG for another 2.00 kick off.

Lewes team: Goode; Benson, Green (captain), B. Smith, Roy; J. Smith, Moore; Gage, Simmonds, Thomas; Bradford, Brooker; Rees, Weston, Medhurst. Replacements: Petty, Coe, Roy, George-Coker.
