On Sunday 22nd February, all three Lewes Lionesses (U14s, U16s and U18s) teams played at home which is a first for the season. The weather was not behaving. Driving wind and rain made for wet and muddy players. The girls loved it!
The U16s Lionesses faced a very decent Pulborough side. The pitch was holding up and, having had so much training cancelled, the players were chomping to get into the match.
The weather made running rugby challenging. Lewes adapted to the weather quickly and started very positively. The Lionesses work at the breakdown made the difference in a very tight game. The ball was a bar of soap and with the wind chill, players hands were having a time of it trying to catch the ball.
Full credit should go to Pulborough. The scoreline does not do their player’s credit. They fought every inch of the way, but it was the Lionesses experience and work in defence (plus some wonderful Strength and Conditioning sessions now reaping dividends) that was the difference at the end with Lewes coming away with the win. At the whistle, the scoreboard read Lewes Lionesses U16s 50 – Pulborough 0
