Lewes RFC are saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Dave Tyrrell, a second generation first team player, on 13th March. His funeral will be at St Edward the Confessor Church, Burgess Hill, on Tuesday 14th April 2026 at 1pm.
Dewi Vaughan writes:
Dave was an outstanding all round sportsman at Longhill school, excelling at both rugby and football, but it was no surprise that he followed in his father’s footsteps by joining Lewes Rugby Club.
Dave starred in the junior section and was a brilliant Colt. Although primarily a 10 like his father (Steve) he could play across the back division, in fact he was selected for Sussex U18’s on the wing!
On progressing to the senior section again, like Steve who was a brilliant 10 in the 70’s, thirty years later Dave was performing with distinction also as a 10. Both were rapid over 20 metres opening up opposition defences.
Dave was also popular with his teammates on and off the pitch, when joining Lewes he brought some schoolmates (who not only went to secondary school but also junior school) with him like Wesley Horscroft another great servant of the club.
After a number of serious injuries curtailed his first team days, he played some social rugby at Burgess Hill where he’d settled with his family. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him but especially his family. RIP David
