Jersey 15 Lewes 20

Lewes flew off from Gatwick to continue their great run of form in Jersey on a day when other results went their way. An early penalty from Gus Taylor set the ball rolling and skipper, James Sale, followed up with Lewes’ opening try. Further scorers from Kane Dadswell and Harry Pryor and a conversion from Gus Taylor were countered by a Jersey try to give a half time score of 5-20 to Lewes.

Jersey came back strongly in the second half in the earlier game last month, and they did it again this time as they got the score back to 15-20. Lewes were not helped by going down to fourteen men after a red card for a high tackle, but they held out for the win which maintains the momentum that has been built this calendar year.

Meanwhile there were some unexpected results elsewhere on a day when all eight teams in the league were playing. League leaders, Hove Beefeaters, were beaten 27-22 by Ditchling, while second placed Eastbourne lost 27-0 to Barns Green. Finally, bottom of the table Steyning won their first game of the season with a 29-21 victory over Horsham Barbarians. What a Super Saturday!

This leaves the league table in an intriguing state with Hove Beefeaters having 59 points from 13 games; Eastbourne with 56 points from their full quota of 14 games; Ditchling gaining 55 points from 12 games and Lewes on 48 points from 11 games.

So there is all to play for as Lewes are still to meet both of their main rivals in the remaining games which are all now 3.00 kick offs. They are away to Ditchling on Saturday 23rd March, and Hove Beefeaters are the visitors on Saturday 6th April when we are entertaining Dave Harris' walkers at a pre-match lunch. Finally, the postponed away game against Horsham Barbarians will be on Saturday 13th March.
